Automation already changed migration. AI is adding another layer on top of that.

Manual migration stopped being practical once environments reached a certain scale. Scripts and tools stepped in and handled the execution speed, consistency, and error reduction that manual work couldn’t sustain. That shift already happened.

What’s coming next is intelligent automation layered on top of what already exists. AI-assisted validation, migration planning with risk detection that surfaces problems before a human would catch them, dependency mapping that reads patterns across logs and configuration history instead of relying on what someone documented.

I don’t see this replacing migration expertise. It shifts where that expertise gets applied. Less time on repetitive validation, more time on the judgment calls that automation isn’t equipped to make.

Engineers who understand both the migration work and where automation fits into it will be well positioned for what comes next. The ones who treat AI as a threat or ignore it entirely will hit the same manual ceilings they always have, just in more complex environments.
