Migration isn’t IT’s responsibility – rather, it is up to the business to manage their transition with IT as its executor.
One of the more frequent mistakes I see when it comes to migration is treating it as something that happens exclusively within IT org, without regard for how this might impact other areas of business.
Migration impacts users, workflows and day-to-day operations — not only systems. When conducted as a solely technical exercise, its flaws become evident almost immediately: communication doesn’t reach those it should, expectations remain vague, and adoption suffers after go-live because none outside IT was prepared for it.
Migrations that go smoothly involve business leaders, end users, and project stakeholders as full participants – not as an afterthought who receives an email the week before the move.
Treating it purely from a technical standpoint results in solving a technical problem while creating people issues.
