Understanding Makes For Successful Migrations

IT used to make all the migration decisions. This era is now over.

Not so long ago, a migration project was an IT task with a set of IT deadlines, executed by IT departments, and communicated after the event — or just before it, which is almost exactly the same.

This model caused a specific problem: the business was affected by successful migrations but not fully understood.

What’s changed are the expectations around communication and alignment prior to any movement. Business stakeholders are now expected to be part early in the process — not just to make technical decision, but also to flag dependencies IT may not have been aware of, identify risky cutover windows missed by the project’s plan, and prepare the teams for the changes.

Migrations do fail, but not because IT isn’t technical enough. They fail when IT treats the project as if it is only IT that is affected.

This is something that organizations who migrate well understand.
