SharePoint Migration Then vs. Now: Why ShareGate Changed Everything

SharePoint migration was once a time of prayer that your custom scripts wouldn’t corrupt metadata and permissions would survive. ShareGate changed all that. Here’s what this shift actually looks and feels like in practice.

ShareGate has changed the way we work. Teams accepted that this was normal.

ShareGate started by changing the assessment process. Pre-scan identifies issues such as unsupported content or naming, and permission structures that are broken before any file moves. At one company that I worked at…that capability shifted our entire conversation from a post-migration clean-up to a pre-migration fix.

Permissions problems still require human judgement. ShareGate can identify gaps but cannot solve them.

ShareGate is a system that engineers should not treat as if it were a one-time installation. The scan results are not automatically interpreted. The tool reveals the answer. The engineer will still have to read the document.
