Experience matters. But experience without reflection leads to the same migration executed slightly quicker every time.

The engineers who improve don’t simply accumulate projects. After each project they ask themselves: What did we plan on that we didn’t need? What did we miss planning for that we should’ve? Why and where did the timeline slip? What would we do differently if we were to start the discovery phase again?

The answers will vary from project-to-project. The failure modes and environments are different. The patterns that appear across projects are what we actually learn.

Experience is the result of twenty migrations done without reflection. Reflecting upon them produces expertise. The biggest difference is when the migrations are more complex.
