When people talk about AI in migration, they usually mean automation — faster execution, less manual work.

The higher-value application happens earlier in the process, during dependency mapping and environment discovery.

Current discovery tools find what’s documented and actively communicating. They struggle with implicit dependencies — the integration that runs once a month, the service account that only matters during a specific business process, the configuration that exists because someone built a workaround three years ago and never documented why.

AI-assisted discovery that can analyze logs, traffic patterns, and configuration history to surface undocumented dependencies will change migration planning. Not because it replaces the judgment call — but because it gives migration engineers better raw material to work from before the first batch runs.

That’s where I see the most immediate application. Not in execution. In knowing what you’re walking into before you start.
