When people talk of AI in migration they usually mean automation – faster execution, less work.
The higher-value application occurs earlier in a process: dependency map and environment discovery.
Current discovery tools reveal what is documented and active communication. They’re less effective at identifying implicit dependencies. For example, an integration that runs every month, a service account that is only important during certain business processes, or a configuration that exists due to a workaround built three years earlier.
AI-assisted discovery, which can analyze patterns from logs, traffic, configuration history and logs to find undocumented dependents, will change migration planning in a major way. Not because the judgement call would be replaced, but rather because it would provide migration engineers with better raw materials to work.
This is the area I see as having the most immediate application. Not in the execution — but in knowing where you’re going before you start.
