There’s a tendency to treat environmental discovery as a checkbox before the real work starts. Export the report from the assessment tool and move on to execution.
That’s backwards.
Most migration outcomes are determined during discovery. If you don’t know what you’re moving, the dependencies between systems, the configurations nobody documented, you’re not planning the migration. You’re setting up an improvisation for 2am.
The best migration engineers I’ve worked with spend a disproportionate amount of time on discovery relative to execution. Not because execution is easy. Because thorough discovery makes execution predictable.
A slow execution is recoverable. Finding a critical dependency at 2am during the cutover window is not.
How much of your total project time goes to discovery and do you think it’s enough?
