Experience matters. But experience without reflection just means running the same migration slightly faster each time.

The engineers who actually improve don’t just accumulate projects. After each one they ask: What did we plan for that we didn’t need? What did we miss that we should have caught? Where did the timeline slip and why? If we ran discovery again from the start, what would we do differently?

The answers change project to project. Environments are different. Failure modes are different. What holds across projects — the patterns that show up regardless of the client or the toolset — that’s where the learning actually lives.

Twenty migrations without reflection is experience. Twenty migrations with it is expertise.

The gap between the two shows up most when the environment is complex and the timeline has no room for figuring it out mid-project.
