In well-organized migrations, there’s a particular type of risk: the checklist which is checked off but not designed properly.

Each item is green. Each dependency is documented. The cutover plan is clean.

Then, something happens that wasn’t in the list. Not because the team was careless but because the list had been designed to reflect what the team already understood. It did not have a way to find out what it didn’t already know.

The most dangerous migration checklists will be those that instill confidence without a basis. They cover all the possible scenarios and give an impression of thoroughness, but they don’t actually stress test the assumptions under them.

The question to ask is not “Is everything on the checklist checked?” The real question is “what didn’t we put on the list and why?”
