Migration is different when you work in an environment that has 1,600+ servers spread across multiple datacenters.

At this scale, nothing is easy. There are dependencies between systems built by teams who no longer exist and years apart. Documentation is inconsistent or non-existent. The environment has accumulated configurations which made sense at the moment and now exist silently, awaiting to be exposed during migration.

Enterprise scale teaches you that you can’t trust what the documentation says. You must verify the actual environment. This means using discovery tools, scripting against real environments, and creating a dependency diagram that reflects the reality, not what someone planned to build five year ago.

Migrations at this scale don’t necessarily require more technical sophistication. They are more adamant about knowing exactly what they’re doing before they begin.
