Understanding Makes For Successful Migrations

IT used to make all the migration decisions. This era is now over.

Not long ago, migration was an IT project with IT deadlines, executed by IT, and communicated to the business just before cutover — or just after. Which is nearly the same thing.

That model created a specific problem. The business absorbed the impact of migrations it never fully understood and had no real input into.

What’s changed is the expectation around alignment before anything moves. Business stakeholders now need to be in the room early — not to make technical decisions, but to flag dependencies IT wouldn’t know to look for, identify cutover windows that would hit the business at the worst possible time, and prepare their teams before the change lands on them.

Migrations don’t fail because IT isn’t technical enough. They fail when IT runs the project as if IT is the only group affected.

Organizations that migrate well know the difference. They treat business unit alignment as part of the technical scope, not a courtesy.

Have you seen a migration succeed or fail based on how early the business units were brought in — and what did that look like in practice?
