Speedy Migrations Can Potentially Lead To Swelling Repair Queues

Migration that creates the greatest amount of cleanup is often the one with the fastest transit time.

There’s always pressure to move quickly; tight deadlines, stakeholders monitoring progress, and an expected go-live date which was set before any work had even begun.

Speed has become the ultimate measure of success.

But speed without validation does not save time – it borrows it back later with interest. Bypassing or rushing validation and you risk data issues going undetected for years after cutover; users dealing with disruption from cutover when it should have been addressed prior to it taking place instead.

I prefer delivering a migration that takes slightly longer and is fully validated than one that meets its date but results in two weeks’ worth of cleanup tickets.

Speed does matter; however, it should not be seen as the deciding factor of whether a migration has taken place successfully or not.
