Are you executing your first large MigrationWiz project and not learning from it?

200 plus Exchange mailboxes. BitTitan MigrationWiz. A parallel SharePoint migration using ShareGate running alongside it. Support for Office 365 migrations across six countries. This was the scope of my first large-scale MigrationWiz Project as an Email Migration Engineer.

Here’s the truth about what happened.

The pre-migration foundation was what I got right. The infrastructure layer was already in place when I built 15 Group Policy objects to manage the migration from file shares to Azure Files, before the content was moved. MigrationWiz’s pre-migration endpoint verification caught permission gaps and authentication issues that would have appeared as item-level error in the first batch if I hadn’t run the endpoint validity first. The mailbox batching structure managed EWS throttling.

I would change the communication structure after migration. The issues that arose in six different client environments after cutover weren’t random. The migration logs during the delta pass showed that the issues were predictable. I had the data. I did not have an organized process for converting that data into a preemptive communication with the support teams at those locations before users began calling. By incorporating this translation process into the Hyper-Care Support plan prior to cutover, the escalation rate in the first 72 hour would have been reduced.

Real field education was gained by resolving Office 365 issues across a distributed client base. The failure patterns, the triage strategy that scaled across geographical regions, and the MigrationWiz errors that pointed to specific source environments configurations instead of migration tool behavior were all learned from supporting the aftermath.

The 200-mailbox Project was the field training that made each enterprise migration I ran faster and better documented.
