MigrationWiz Teams Migration and Why Chat History Does Not Move the Way Stakeholders Expect

If stakeholders are expecting to open Teams in the destination tenant and see their old chats as live reply-ready threads, that expectation needs to be corrected early. MigrationWiz can migrate Teams conversation data, but it cannot recreate historical messages inside an active Teams chat thread in the target tenant.

What you get after migration is an archive. Depending on how the project is configured, the conversations arrive as static HTML files stored either in a dedicated folder in the target user mailbox or in a Teams channel Files tab. When a user opens the migrated content, they are looking at an HTML document, not a scrollable thread they can continue.

This is a Microsoft data portability limitation at the Graph API layer. The Teams conversation API does not allow writing historical messages into live destination threads.

To a business stakeholder, your Teams chat history will be migrated and your Teams chat history will be available as a read-only HTML archive are not the same promise. MigrationWiz delivers the second outcome, and it should be described that way before any cutover messaging goes out.

Have you shown stakeholders what the Teams conversation migration output actually looks like in MigrationWiz before cutover night?
