When Identity Migration Goes Wrong

Identity failures don’t all show up at once. They surface in order.

Users can’t log in. The most visible failure — and usually the first call to the help desk.

Permissions disappear silently. Users authenticate but can’t reach the files, applications, or SharePoint sites they need. They’re in the system. They just can’t do their job.

Service accounts stop working. Automated processes and integrations start failing quietly. Nobody notices until expected output doesn’t arrive.

Group memberships break. Distribution lists, security groups, Teams membership — gone or incomplete, with no error message to trace it back to.

Conditional access policies misfire. Users get blocked from resources they should reach, or they reach resources they shouldn’t. Both are problems. The second one is a compliance problem.

One of these is a bad morning. Two or more happening simultaneously is an incident.

Identity migration isn’t background work that runs while the “real” migration happens. It’s the foundation everything else depends on. Treat it that way or spend Hyper Care finding out why you shouldn’t have.

What’s the identity failure that’s caught you off guard mid-migration — and how far into cutover did it surface?
