Are you planning to migrate shared mailboxes with MigrationWiz without budgeting for the per-object UMB licensing requirement?

In Exchange Online, shared mailboxes under 50GB do not require an Exchange Online Plan license in the destination tenant. MigrationWiz licensing works differently: it requires a User Migration Bundle for every destination object it migrates to, including shared mailboxes, regardless of the destination tenant Exchange Online licensing model.

That difference can create an unexpected budget line item for project owners who assume UMB counts align directly with licensed user accounts. If your environment includes 40 shared mailboxes, you will need 40 additional UMBs beyond the user mailbox count, and they must be purchased and assigned before those shared mailbox migration jobs can run.

In some cases, teams try to avoid separate UMB costs for shared mailboxes by migrating the shared mailbox content into a standard user mailbox in the destination, consuming one UMB for that user mailbox, and then converting that mailbox to a shared mailbox after migration completes and before new mail flow builds up. This approach requires careful timing and adds a post-migration configuration step that should be tracked in the runbook.
