Are you dismissing certifications just because you have experience in the field, or are using your experience to make certifications worth something?

The criticism is valid. A migration engineer who has three Microsoft certifications but no migration projects is not ready to be engaged in an enterprise engagement. Certifications don’t teach you how BitTitan MigrationWiz looks at 3 AM when a cutover is taking place, or what the item-level error patterns look like in Entra ID object migrating relative to Exchange Online mailbox migration when both workstreams run in the same maintenance period.

Certifications fill in the gaps that production experience alone cannot always reveal.

The AZ-305 Azure Solutions Architect Credential has helped me to deepen my architectural thinking about the Azure workloads that I was migrating. The exam content, which covered identity architecture, hybrid connectivity, storage design and storage design, gave me a framework to make assessment decisions prior to migration execution. This is not always the case when you run migrations. You get it when you are forced to think about scenarios that have never come up before in your project history.

The AZ-104 Azure Administrator Associate certification gave me the administrative depth I needed to troubleshoot Entra ID issues and hybrid identity issues that arose mid-migration. The engineer who understands how Entra ID enterprise applications are registered, how conditional policies evaluate claims and how hybrid identity synchronization affects downstream authentication will close the ticket when an SSO application fails after a tenant to tenant identity migration.

The MCSE Productivity credential is below both of these and represents the administrative depth required for large mailbox migrations at every level.

Certifications are the language that engineers with field experience can use to explain what they have done and how they can handle new situations.
