Four traits I’ve observed in the migration engineers that consistently deliver

They plan before they touch anything. Dependencies are mapped before execution starts, not discovered mid-cutover when the options are limited.

They validate instead of assuming. “It looks like it worked” and “it worked” are two different claims. Engineers who deliver consistently treat them that way.

They understand systems, not tickets. They know how the environment works as a unit, not just the piece they’re currently touching. That’s what lets them see failures coming before the monitoring tools report them.

They never lose sight of business continuity. Every technical decision gets weighed against what it means for the people who depend on the system. The migration succeeds when those people can do their jobs on Monday.

The common thread is discipline, not credentials. Migration is technically difficult. Engineers who deliver it consistently treat it as operational work first and technical work second.
