Migration was once solely the responsibility of one team; today it requires input from across an entire organization.
Once upon a time, migrations were performed solely within IT; plan, run, support. And they were finished!
Migrations no longer follow this linear path; real migrations now involve infrastructure, security, application owners and business stakeholders whose dependencies determine whether the migration actually goes through successfully.
Without proper coordination, timelines slip due to no one flagging dependencies early enough, issues go undetected because key stakeholders weren’t kept in the loop and communication breaks down at just the wrong time – exactly when clarity is most required by stakeholders.
I’ve witnessed technically sound migrations stall due to issues unrelated to technology — they faltered because key personnel weren’t clear on what was taking place and when.
Execution can get you most of the way, while coordination provides the final push forward.
