Every Migration That Actually Goes Well

Four steps that every migration that goes well follows

Successive designs tend to be similar across environments, tools and scales:

  1. Assessment & Planning – Understand the environment first before you touch it
  2. Environment Preparation — Get source and Destination Ready, Not Just Willing
  3. Execution – the part that everyone will notice, and the shortest one if the other two are done correctly
  4. Validation – confirm that it actually worked and stay close to it while it settles

If you skip steps, you won’t save time. Instead, you’ll be relocating work to the after-cutover period when it will be more expensive and visible.
