What ShareGate Does

ShareGate is a migration, governance, and management platform built specifically for M365 workloads. It handles SharePoint Online, Microsoft Teams, OneDrive for Business, and Exchange Online migrations. I’ve used it across multiple enterprise projects and it’s been a consistent part of my migration stack.

What It Solves

The questions that come up in every M365 migration planning conversation are the same. How do we migrate deltas while keeping RTO and RPO within acceptable limits? Which content belongs in cold storage versus active remediation? How do we preserve NTFS permissions and taxonomy metadata mappings through the migration? What does minimal end user disruption actually look like in practice?

ShareGate surfaces these considerations early in the assessment phase, before the migration runs, when there’s still time to make decisions that matter. The platform validates migrations before they execute and provides rollback capability when something needs to be unwound.

What It Automates

Incremental object syncs, content transformations, and compliance audit generation all run through the platform. On a recent project, the compliance audit output alone saved hours of manual documentation that would have been required for stakeholder sign-off.

Post-Migration Governance

ShareGate doesn’t stop being useful after cutover. The platform handles lifecycle management for M365 workloads after migration is complete. Team architecture refactoring, permission sprawl remediation, and tenant topology optimization are all ongoing work in most enterprise environments. Having a single platform that handles migration and the governance work that follows it reduces the tooling complexity significantly.

ShareGate turns what would otherwise be a one-time project into a repeatable operational process. That distinction matters more than it sounds on the second or third migration inside the same organization.
