Do you evaluate which migration tool you will use for your next enterprise program without first evaluating whether your planning structure is capable of supporting any tool?

BitTitan MigrationWiz has a mature and capable platform. The Azure Migrate Tool has a good documentation and is widely used. ShareGate handles SharePoint content migration effectively. These are not the factors that determine whether or not an enterprise migration is successful.

Inadequate planning, poor alignment of stakeholders, or inadequate post-migration support structures are the most common causes of migration failures at enterprise level. Not by tool limitations.

The runbook is a direct proof. The Azure Migration runbook I created for a large divestiture was the structural element which allowed the tools to work correctly. Even a well-configured MigrationWiz engagement or Azure Migrate Tool deployment will drift away from the sequencing logic on which the program relies. The tool does enforce the plan. The documentation enforces plan.

Most migration programs fail because of a gap in identity planning. Planning failures include not validating Entra ID synchronization time, hybrid identity configuration and domain rehoming sequence before cutover. If an engineer is reading the output, then the tools will highlight these gaps during trial migrations or item-level error reports. If no one is reading the output, then the tool has done its job. The program still failed.

The Hyper Care Support structure, a five-person team that managed 500+ clients in three post-migration phases at a large divestiture program, was created because the program leadership recognized that migration success can be measured 30 days after cutover. This understanding is a decision on planning and resource allocation. The tools will not make you successful.

The migration tool that you choose is less important than the runbook and support team that you create before you open the program.
